Executive Presence: How to Show Up, Speak Up & Stand Out
Sep 16, 2025
You’ve been in those rooms. The ones where someone walks in, says very little at first… and still manages to command the entire space.
That’s executive presence.
And while it’s often misunderstood, or misapplied, it’s one of the most powerful leadership differentiators you can develop.
For decades, “executive presence” has been defined through a narrow lens, one that favored a certain look, height, voice, or background. Those biases are real, and they can be barriers.
But, authentic executive presence isn’t about fitting someone else’s mold. It’s about showing up as the most confident, credible, and compelling version of yourself, so your contributions are seen, heard, and valued.
What executive presence really means
For decades, executive presence was defined through a narrow lens of gravitas, communication skills, and appearance, often with unspoken biases about what those should look or sound like.
Those elements still matter greatly, but the way we approach them today has changed. Presence is no longer about fitting a mold, it’s about showing up as the most confident, credible, and authentic version of yourself.
In fact, research from Albert Mehrabian shows that 93% of what people take away from an interaction is nonverbal, 55% body language and 38% vocal tone, while just 7% comes from the actual words you speak.
It’s the combination of how you show up, how you speak, and how you make people feel. And, crucially, it’s something you can strengthen no matter your title, background, or physical stature.
Neuroscience backs this up: when you embody confidence and composure, you activate “mirror neurons” in others, causing them to reflect your energy and emotion. This is why certain leaders can energize a room just by entering it.
The three key elements of powerful leadership presence
-
Presence: The way you carry yourself physically, your posture, movement, eye contact, and expressions, signals confidence before you say a word.
-
Communication: Strong leaders speak with clarity, intention, and vocal variety so their message engages and inspires.
-
Gravitas: Staying composed and decisive under pressure builds trust and makes people want to follow your lead.
Try these three presence practices this week
→ Claim your space before you speak
Walk into a meeting with deliberate posture and calm energy. Before speaking, take a breath and make eye contact with a few people around the room.
→ Slow your pace
When sharing an important point, reduce your speaking speed and pause after the key sentence. This lets your words land and signals confidence.
→ Match message to manner
Record yourself during a presentation. Does your facial expression, tone, and posture align with your message? Small adjustments here can make a big impact on how your message is received.
Why this matters
Executive presence is not about pretending to be someone you’re not. It’s about knowing your value, showing up with authenticity, and using your voice and presence to ensure that value is recognized.
When you master how to show up, speak up, and stand out, you don’t just change how others see you. You change how you see yourself. And that changes everything.
So here’s my question for you: How will you step into your most confident, authentic presence this week?
I'm rooting for you!
