How Do You Stick to Your Goals?

Anyone who knows me knows I like to set BHAGs, A.K.A. “Big Hairy Audacious Goals.” I bet a lot of you can relate to that!

One of the tricks I employ to hold my feet to the fire is to tell others about my BHAGs. Seems so simple, doesn’t it? But many times people don’t consider this. Or they’re afraid of throwing that great BIG SCARY goal out there – in case they fall flat on their face.

But that’s the whole point … If I let others know about my BHAGs, then those goals are out in the ether, not just inside by head. And my ego’s on the line. After all, friends will be asking me, “How is that new venture going?” Or, “Have you finished that project yet?” I can’t just change the subject. And now way am I going to admit defeat.

You can see what an effective mechanism this is? When you KNOW someone else is following your progress, it really lights a fire …

Here’s my current BHAG. I’m finally finishing my research manuscript to advance to Fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives. It’s due in 4 ½ weeks. And it’s summer. And I’m a procrastinator. But I’m getting there. And I can’t wait to celebrate at  MGMA2011 in Las Vegas (if) when it’s approved! Feel free to check in on August 26th and confirm that I’ve submitted.
